Dont know where to put this so here is good i guess

Hey i'm having trouble finding some information. Mostly i just need to know where to look. i'm looking for tables that give the experience value for crafting items. Such as the exp value for making a suit of full plate or a master work sword. I'm playing version 2 AD&D. I just need to know which book to look in, or even if such a table exists. I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

I think Oriental Adventures was the first book to mention giving characters XP for creating items (other than potions and such).

PHB: "Wizards also earn  experience  points for researching new spells and creating, magical items. "
The exact rules are in the DMg, which I don't have with ATM, sorry. Look under Experience Awrds in that book, however.
EDIT: Found it from home. Thought it was just the XP of the item, as in the treasure tables.

Chapter 8, DMG:
"Priest
Making potion or scroll      XP value
Making permanent magical item      XP value

Wizard
Spells successfully researched      500 XP/spell level
Making potion or scroll      XP value
Making permanent magical item      XP value      "

Oh, is that what the XP value was for?  When we played AD&D Tabletop, the XP was given to the characters gaining the magical items who benefitted from the item.  (Remember that, Jim?) I always wondered about that... just didn't seem to make much sense.  How can just obtaining and occasionally using (or passively using in the case of bracers or a ring) give actual instant experience to a person?  Heh.  Some things it was understandable, like a Well of Many Worlds, perhaps.  But just obtaining a Firebrand doesn't necessarily fill any joe schmoe with bits of life's experience for which to advance one's profession.

Geez, that makes a lot more sense.  XP for creating them...

Incidentally, you're always welcome to start new threads in the General category / General OOC Chat area.

Well, we used it for both. Although some places I played, you got 10% of the value for finding it, full for creating it. It never really says how to use the XP, it just gives XP values for magic, and since it's in the treasure section, and it says give 1 xp/gp, everyone always just gave that much for finding it.

Personally, I feel the full XP for finding is fine. It represents not only figuring out what it is / how to use it, but the difficulty in gaining it as well. Sometimes, when I left a pile of valuables just lying around for the taking, I might feel it was justified to reduce XP- but I rarely (if ever...?) did that. You find something valuable, it's because someone else had it. You don't find a simple claw hammer lying around in a construction site IRL. (Well, maybe, but it'd be rare and you'd need to be the first one there right after the worker who forgot it left.)

I had an abandoned dungeon once, the PCs had a choice, 'this place' or 'the abandoned dungeon everyone in the village knows about (and the kids go exploring)'. They choose the abandoned place, and before they left the village, I gave them a child to guide them to where it was. They didn't get the clue that the adults had no problems letting an 8 year old go to this dungeon alone. (I mean, earlier, without the PCs, this kid went dungeon crawling in there.) They were very upset when they searched the entire place, and found nothing. Duh! The place was abandoned, I told them that at the beginning! They found things like broken picture frames (no pictures) and an old corn broom. I did give them what I thought was a lot of XP for doing basically nothing. They were very tactical, and had all sorts of plans, and mapped the place nicely. Wink

Maybe they thought you were trying to mislead them away from something valuable... smoke and mirrors kind of thing.

Could be. I'm kinda hard to figure, as soon as you figure how I DM, I tend to do something unusual on purpose so you can't use what you figured.

There is no official rule on that, although I've always thought it should be similar to creating a magic item. Since you gt 1 XP for each GP you find, it would be reasonable to assign the same for creating something of that value. This may come out really odd, so it needs to be done with a grain of salt. For example, a 4,000 GP suit of Full Plate Armor would be worth 500 GP if +1 magical, and would actually be worth much more if non-magical (since you only get experience for the magic bonus, not the type of armor).

Note however, for that suit to be made by a PC, he would need to be out of the campaign for months (game time). He'd probably get more experience adventuring. I have found several magical ways to speed the mudane creation process, although I'm not too sure how much experience that would relate to. By the time any of my characters actually got to a level where they could easily do such a thing, the experience was not enough to make a huge difference and was pretty much ignored. The DM tended to allow more leeway in what i wanted for the item, which was to benefit my character anyhow, for the fact I didn't bother with the nit-picky details that didn't matter too much in the end.

The best example, I had a character make a suit of Full Plate Armor out of special metal we had found on an adventure. It was engraved, enamaled, the whole shot. He ws high level, around 12, at the time. The 4,000 XP wouldn't have made too much of a difference, but the armor made a huge difference. It's quite likely the armor was worth more than that, as well. Instead of bothering with XP, the DM allowed me to crate it 'in my spare time'. This took quite a bit longer in game, but he got everything he wanted, and still went adventuring. When he finally finished, he had a unique item that he was proud of, and tried showing off to everyone. He tended to get some extra XP for RPing that, as well.
