Desmond does notice at the ceiling of the elevator car there is a square about 2' x 2' that looks like it might be a hatch. Luckily, this elevator car is shorter than most, being designed to hide inside a pantry. Desmond reaches up and pushes against the trap door in the ceiling and it easily swings open. The light from within bleeds into the dark shaft allowing Cathy and Heather to see better.

It is a tight fit between the shaft and the car, but both women make it through - not without tearing some clothing on sharp corners or getting slightly greasy in the process. Finally, they reach the top of the elevator car and can see down within where Desmond stands waiting.

"It wasn't exactly safe down there after all," says Heather, wiping off the grease. "It's a shame we couldn't get that video out with us, but once the signal started going over the intercom we had to get out of there. We're the only ones who viewed it, and there was no audio, so we couldn't make out what the crazies were saying at the moment they were first exposed to the sound. We were going to get the deaf technician to read their lips, but the little electric guy killed him so he couldn't. I'm not sure where we can go now. Cathy, are there any other facilities like this one in other cities?"

Desmond says "Oh, that's rich. The stoner is turning noble on us." He shook his head. "Look guys and gals, first thing is first. We need to leave the city. The smoke and dust is toxic. There are still crazies around. It simply isn't safe. We need to determine which is the shortest and safest path out. Does anyone have a map of the city or know the area good enough to have some idea where we are?"

Cathy responds, "I know where we are. Shortest path out of the city is south by foot but we're practically in the middle of the city if you take all the suburbs into consideration so it'll be quite a hike - seven or eight miles. We could try going north to the river and finding some sort of boat there that we could float to the harbor."

She turns to Heather and answers, "I don't know of any other places like this. I'm sure there were some, but that wasn't the sort of thing I had clearance for. The Major, however... he would have information like that in his office in the safe."

Cathy shrugged at the question, "I don't know... wait, maybe. The major did tend to keep a yellow sticky note on the bottom side of his keyboard. I never really thought much about it. It could be the combination to the safe. Even still... I don't plan on going back down there. Screw that."

She sat down in one of the booths of the bakery and watched as the others continued to discuss their options.

Desmond thought about what returning down there meant. "It's very risky," he said to Heather. "Insanity and death... that's what you're up against heading back down there. If there are other bases like this, they are probably not in this city. So what good would that do us? Might give us direction, but we're still without wheels. And although we could hit port cities with a boat we confinscate, anything in land will be near impossible to reach. I'm sure the roads are cluttered with wrecks. Gas stations won't run without electricity to operate the pumps."

How far is it to the water? We get a car we won't be needin' much gas. We gotta make a break for it soon though, fore these fucking crazies get a bean on us. Desmond looked outside the bakery, his eyes wandering through the smoke until they lock on something. "Guys... cover me, I'm going to see if I can get us out of this predicament."

He bolted out the door and headed to a nearby parked car, kneeling beside it and looking every-which way for anything moving about in the smoke. Not spying anything warranting concern, he looked inside the car for a car alarm, then checked the door. Locked. He took the butt of his weapon and smashed the window, then rifled through the glove compartment.

Desmond finishes fishing around in the glove compartment of the car, stands up and looks left and right, then high-tails it back to the bakery. When he gets in, he coughs a few times. "D*mn smoke..." he says between breaths. "It's all over the place. I think the lunatics even had presence of mind enough to wander out of the city... well, not that blind guy, but maybe he couldn't see to get out."

The big guy has something in his hands which he puts down on a table as he clears his lungs with a few noisy coughs.

Two items. 1 - a folded map of Massachusetts. The other, a Tom-Tom GPS system.

Cathy looked at the GPS system and said, "I have one of those. If the battery is charged, it should last a good couple hours before dying on us."
